Suture Manufacturing Process (Surgical Sutures)

Sutures are sterile threads used by surgeons to close wounds and surgical incisions. Manufacturing varies depending on whether the suture is absorbable or non-absorbable.

1. Raw Material Preparation

  • Absorbable Sutures: PGA (Polyglycolic Acid), Polyglactin 910, PDO (Polydioxanone)
  • Non-Absorbable Sutures: Nylon, Polypropylene, Polyester, Silk

2. Extrusion or Fiber Formation

  • Polymer granules are melted and extruded through fine dies.
  • Continuous filaments are produced and cooled.

3. Drawing & Stretching

  • Fibers are stretched to improve:
    • Tensile strength
    • Elasticity
    • Diameter consistency

4. Braiding or Twisting

  • Monofilament sutures: Single strand
  • Multifilament sutures: Multiple fibers braided together

5. Coating Process

  • Sutures may be coated with substances such as:
    • Silicone
    • Calcium stearate
    • Polycaprolactone
  • Purpose:
    • Smooth passage through tissue
    • Reduced friction

6. Needle Attachment (Swaging)

  • Surgical needles are crimped onto suture ends using precision machines.

7. Cutting & Length Measurement

  • Sutures are cut into standard lengths:
    • 45 cm
    • 75 cm
    • 90 cm
    • Other customized sizes

8. Sterilization

Common sterilization methods:

  • Ethylene Oxide (EO)
  • Gamma Radiation
  • Electron Beam

9. Packaging

  • Individual sterile packs
  • Labeling with:
    • Suture type
    • Size (USP)
    • Lot number
    • Expiry date

10. Quality Control Tests

  • Tensile strength test
  • Knot-pull strength test
  • Diameter verification
  • Sterility testing
  • Biocompatibility testing

Typical Machinery Used

  1. Polymer Extruder
  2. Fiber Drawing Machine
  3. Braiding Machine
  4. Coating Machine
  5. Needle Swaging Machine
  6. Cutting & Winding Machine
  7. EO Sterilizer / Gamma Sterilization System
  8. Packaging Machine
