What is VOC ?
In the Define phase of DMAIC (Six Sigma Green Belt), VOC stands for Voice of the Customer. It is the process of gathering and analyzing customer feedback to understand their needs, expectations, and preferences. VOC ensures that improvement projects are aligned with what truly matters to customers, not just internal efficiency
What is VOC?

VOC in the Define Phase
1.Collect Customer Input
2.Use surveys, interviews, or complaint analysis.

1.Group feedback into themes (e.g., speed, quality, cost).
2.Translate into Requirements
3.Convert broad needs into measurable CTQs (Critical to Quality).
Translate into Requirements
Convert broad needs into measurable CTQs (Critical to Quality).
Example: VOC = “I want reliable service.” → CTQ = “System uptime ≥ 99.9%.”
Benefits of VOC
Ensures projects are customer driven.
Prevents wasted effort on improvements that don’t impact customer satisfaction.
Provides a foundation for CTQ trees and measurable goals.
In short: VOC in the Define phase is the structured way of listening to customers and converting their expectations into actionable, measurable requirements for the Six Sigma project.
